📏 How to Measure for a Standard Buckle or Quick Release Collar

Custom Fit for Every Pup

Our collars are crafted with a straightforward numerical sizing system that ensures a custom fit for your dog. Whether you prefer a standard buckle or an adjustable quick release, we’re here to help you find the perfect size!

Method 1: Using an Existing Collar

  1. Choose a Well-Fitting Collar: Pick a collar that already fits your dog comfortably.
  2. Lay the Collar Flat: Place the collar on a flat surface.
  3. Measure from Point A to Point B: Measure the length from the pin in the buckle (Point A) to the hole that fits best (Point B). Ignore the length of the buckle in your measurement.
  4. Round Up for Comfort: Round up to the nearest inch for your collar size. If you’re deciding between two sizes, choose the larger one for a more comfortable fit.

Method 2: Using a Soft Tape Measure or String

  1. Grab a Soft Tape Measure or String: If you don’t have a tape measure, use a piece of string.
  2. Calm Your Dog: Have your dog sit down calmly to make the process easier.
  3. Wrap Around the Neck: Place the tape measure or string around your dog’s neck where the collar would normally sit.
  4. Check for Comfort: Make sure you can slip two fingers comfortably under the measuring tool for a good fit.
  5. Mark and Measure: Note where the string or tape meets, then measure it flat.
  6. Round Up to the Nearest Inch: When in doubt, opt for the larger size for extra comfort.

How to Measure for a Slip or Martingale Collar

Slip collars and Martingale collars work differently from standard collars, so it’s important to measure correctly. These types of collars are great for dogs that tend to pull on the leash because they provide more control without a buckle.

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Use a Tailor’s Tape Measure or String: A soft measuring tape is best, but a piece of string works too.
  2. Measure Around the Widest Part of the Head: Wrap the measuring tool around the widest part of your dog’s head, just behind the ears. This ensures the collar can slide over your dog’s head but stay secure when in place.
  3. Check the Fit: The tape should be snug enough to fit over your dog’s head comfortably but not too loose that it slips off easily.
  4. Add Extra Room: Add 2–4 inches to this measurement to ensure the collar has some extra space. For example, if your dog’s head measures 18 inches, you should opt for a 20–24 inch slip collar. We suggest adding 4 inches for the best fit, but this can be adjusted based on your preference.

Why Choose a Slip or Martingale Collar?

Slip collars are designed for dogs that pull on the leash, offering better control and reducing the risk of the dog backing out of the collar. Unlike standard collars, slip collars do not have a buckle, making them easy to put on and take off while providing a secure fit during walks.

🐾 Finding the Perfect Fit: Tips and Tricks

  • Check the Fit Regularly: Dogs can gain or lose weight, so it’s a good idea to measure their neck size periodically, especially if they’re still growing.
  • Consider Your Dog’s Activity Level: If your dog loves swimming or playing in the mud, our waterproof Biothane® collars are the best choice for durability and easy cleaning.
  • When in Doubt, Size Up: A slightly larger collar is always better than one that’s too tight. Your dog’s comfort and safety are our top priority!
